EXCLUSIVE $1.1B class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of former ‘Indian hospital’ patients

January 30, 2018

Two Canadian law firms have filed a $1.1-billion class-action lawsuit on behalf of former patients of government-run “Indian hospitals,” which comprised a decades-long segregated health care system now marred by allegations of widespread mistreatment and abuse, CBC News has learned.

The lawsuit focuses on 29 segregated hospitals operated across the country by the federal government between 1945 and the early 1980s. Researchers say thousands of Indigenous patients may have been admitted to the institutions during that four-decade span.

January 17, 2018

As cases of data breach and online frauds fox the authorities in India and abroad, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has warned that cybersecurity threats are outpacing the abilities of the governments and companies to overpower them unless all stakeholders cooperate.

In a new report to be discussed in detail at its annual meeting in Swiss ski resort town of Davos by over 3,000 world leaders including from India, the Geneva-based WEF said working collaboratively in the cybersecurity space is difficult and there is no “simple policy solution or silver bullet here”.

They say they suffered ‘cruel and sadistic’ abuse as kids at Ontario training schools — and the government paid them to keep quiet

December 8, 2017

The Ontario government has secretly settled hundreds of lawsuits alleging historic sexual, physical and emotional abuse by teachers and staff at provincially run schools for troubled youth, a Star investigation has found.

Staff and teachers were accused of sodomizing students, forcing them to perform oral sex, and pushing them to engage in “scrambles,” a sort of fight club where students were encouraged to beat one another.

Brampton power plant ‘gamed’ Ontario electricity system for millions, fined $10M

December 6, 2017

A Brampton gas plant that the government admits “gamed” Ontario’s electricity system for $120 million in overbillings will pocket $10 million despite a $10 million fine and $100 million repayment order.

The situation uncovered in a month-old Ontario Energy Board report Tuesday left Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals on the defensive with a provincial election just six months away.

Opposition parties raised concerns the 2015 settlement with the Goreway Station Partnership — which rejects assertions it “deliberately” gamed ratepayers — was hushed up for political reasons and called for a deeper investigation, possibly by police.
